Killzone 2 MP.. has got problems.

In the previous post , I covered the good features of KZ2’s MP, now lets get to the part which really bugged me. In fact, I started writing about the MP only because I wanted to mention how some implementations in the game thwarted its chances of becoming one of the best possible MP experiences.

What I’ll do here is, point out what all I didn’t like about the thing, and try to think of a reason WHY it was put in such a way.. i.e how the devs possibly justified their decision

So lets get to the dark side!

The Class system!

No choices till you do the other things you dont want to.

No choices till you do the other things you dont want to.

First thing you’ll hear about Killzone2 MP is that its “Class based” well.. class based is when the player is allowed to choose which type of weapons to use during the matches.

BUT, in the beginning,  the game limits the weapon to only the Assault rifles. At first, I was thinking that it was because of the server side settings, but later found out that it was because everything else is “locked” till you level up.

You don’t get a new weapon ability even till the 3rd rank, and the sniper is unlocked when the highest rank is achieved. Its quite absurd actually, if you’re supposed to have a class based gameplay, why not allow the player to choose the class from the beginning itself?

*How it should have been

Once the basic classes are chosen, the levelling up of character should unlock more powerful weapons of the same class, or just allow access to other general weapons and abilities. If the game was of that kind, then everything would have been lot better.

Right now..a person like me, who is itching to get his hands on the rifles, will not get the hands on the weapon till many hours of gameplay. There’s a good chance, that I, after playing for so long with only the assault rifle, will find it to be the best choice. Which will be the case with many other people too.

*Why did they choose this?

Having invested so much on the MP experience, I was wondering why they made this different choice.. the only reason could be that they thought its better to let the player progressively experience every class as he reaches the top rank, and then choose his/her own path. As opposed to having the player choose his/her own path from the beginning itself.

That reason is.. quite good I think, but I think most of the players now a days already know what kind of player they are, assist, attack, defend etc.. so why make them all go through the same thing again? The part with sniper being the last rank is quite sad.. because only a few will want to be a sniper and they have to rank up, using weapons which they dont have fun with.

If only the rankings had nothing to do with classes..

No Assist points!

No points for assiting men

No points for assisting men

Another big thing that you notice while playing the game is that.. there’s no assist point in the game! Assist points are those points that a player gets if s/he does a good amount of damage to someone else’s kill. Its not the question of kill stealing, many people are assist type who move around behind people and give backup.. most of the times they spot the enemy first and shoot him so that the one in front doesn’t get hurt, and the one in front kills the wounded enemy.

Its a good tactic used by many when in a good team.. also theres the sniper which people just call “Assist class”.

*So, what’s the problem?

Well, not only does the game requires you to reach a high level to first get access to weapons like rifles and snipers, but then you’re ranking up is slowed down, IF you’re a rifle/sniper user, because of the fact that there is no assist points. Once again.. degrading the whole gameplay experience, alienating a huge piece of player pie.

*Why did they choose this?

Most probably they couldn’t find a way to properly decide when to give an assist and when to not.. or maybe the devs thought that people should be rewarded in non uniform ways.. no matter how you look at this.. it feels like its because of their laziness.

Take Cover!

no-cover-kz2

One of the best things about the Single player campaign of KZ2 was its really nice and unique cover system. I don’t think any other FPS ever implemented the cover system in such an intuitive way. If you want to play with thought, then cover comes into play very much.

But oh noes! The cover mechanics are totally disabled in the multiplayer modes. I couldn’t think WHY one would remove such a good part of the game.. the only reason that could justify this decision was that..

Maybe they thought it’ll allow people to perform some weird wall sticking or other things to glitch and cheat.  Don’t think they would have removed the Cover Mechanism.. just coz, that would be lame.

Super Low ammo, No packs

When you start a match, with the assault rifles, you’re given only 64 bullets for what people usually tend to use like a machine gun. The game has no concept of ammo packs and such, therefore, making the player to learn how to frugally use ammo. You can run and pickup ammo from the downed players however. The problem arrives only during stand-offs and last man each team type situations. You’ll have to think a lot and only then shoot, and if you’ve lived for a longer time then you’ll have to keep moving in search of others dead bodies for ammo.

On Second thought, if you think hard enough.. it feels like this decision was made so that many situations can be created where the tension is high.  Not only will it teach people to use ammo properly, but it will also make the player want to move from one location to another, because staying in one location and shooting will deplete the ammo and then you cant do anything but move out of there in search for more ammo.

What’s my Ping?

I dont understand why many console games just don’t show ping while selecting server? With many of the servers being player created ones.. ping should be an important factor for deciding which match to join.. BUT they don’t show it.. in any form.. not even those traffic light type signals.

I mean, Warhawk has a really neat match selection area, where it shows and allows us to sort things by ping.  I don’t know if there’s an internal mechanism which auto sorts everything by ping or whatever. It just isn’t nice to not show the ping while selecting matches!

The other Stuff

Halt, Who goes there?

Halt, Who goes there?

There are some more smaller things that bother me a lot.. like that fact that you die too easily in CQC conditions, You need to press X to respawn, and then in the menu that comes after that, pressing X takes you out, but pressing O re spawns you.. you if you press X twice (of which there are LOTS of chances) then you will be taken to the quit option.. and if you’re really in the heat of the battle.. you will immediately press “Oh no, its O” and then quit the match.

A very irritating irritation indeed!

All in all.. the game is quite enjoyable, but its sad to see that many easy to do things were taken out of the game and many features are not implemented well.. Its hard to think that its been under 5years of development, and still have such simple problems. Oh well.. I guess after a few months, when EVERYONE is top level.. that’s when the real games start, because that’s when all will be free to choose their own class of interest and play how they like.

    Weak article.

You should go back into some news archives to uncover why GG did what they did with the MP. There’s reasoning behind all of their decisions.

You’ve got problems, not the MP.

    • Reetesh says:

I understand that there’s a reasoning behind every decision. Its made by taking opinions from everyone around and choosing which, according that sample, pleases most people. Simply put, I happen to be in the minority they were willing to sacrifice. Hence, yeah.. I’ve got problems, with the MP, which is why I think that the MP’s got some problems.

  2. Joe says:

I like leveling up to gain weapons, and classes. It gives me something to do. Without all of that it would be boring.

    • renato says:

when you check ur statistics for MP does it show everything u done
becuz i play alot and my points, deaths, kills…ECT…
      wont go up
do u have a similar problem
      please reply!!!!

      • Reetesh says:

Well, If I check my stats, in-game, immediately after completing a play session, it doesnt show perfect stats.. most likely, doesnt add the last match’s stats. After sometime, like the next time I log-in, the stats are updated.. so Its just a small delay, nothing to worry about :D

  3. C says:

You don’t press O after pressing X to respawn! You hit X to respawn, pick your load out then hit X to join again. I’m calling bullsh*t that you’ve played the game.

    • Reetesh says:

I have a NTSC-J console where O is accept and X is exit, thats the reason for the problem. (Game is PAL) They should have assigned respawn to “accept” rather than manually to “x”.

Oh lord, wave of pissed off PS3 kids incoming.

    I’ll pray for you…

  5. Thesmoke says:

wait wait wait…. first off.. you start off with the rifle.. you dont upgrade to it. you upgrade to shotguns.rocket launchers/sniper rifles… so maybe you mean sniper when you say rifle. Another thing, when progressing, you do indeed earn more ammo.. and furthermore.. engineers gain the ability to repair the ammo crates where ammo is available for your team.. maybe you just havent played the game enough to realize these things.

    • Reetesh says:

Assualt Rifle isnt actually a “rifle” I am talking about the single shot rifles..you know.. the STA14

I was talking about how I first need to play in ways that I have no total interest in, to get to the point where everything gets interesting. It shouldn’t take me 5-8 hours to get everything working the way I want.

  6. Squidyj says:

    wow, what a terrible ‘article’

There are actual issues with MP performance (touched on by the ars-technica article) but what you wrote comes off as though you never actually played the game.

Your first point is a personal opinion regarding an aesthetic and I haven’t met anyone who shared it.

Assist Points would be nice, but they are hardly a huge flaw when kills are so quick.

No Cover, if you were at all familiar with the development of the game, they had cover in MP and it was a bad mechanic, so they took it out and things were a lot better.

Ammo is a resource, this is specifically why the engineer has the ability to repair ammo crates which allow players to restore their supplies. Furthermore the ammo you start with is increased based on the exemplary soldier medal, along with the grenade medal it’s the easiest in the game to earn.

The point of the system is to ease players into the gameplay, you start off with an assault rifle, a basic pistol, and a grenade, just like everyone else in your game, and as you rank up you unlock different levels and layers of the game to adapt to, such that you master one aspect and then you’re ready to move on to learning the next. The decisions you decry so vociferously are just that, design decisions that are guaranteed not to please EVERYBODY but seem to be doing a very good job at pleasing most people (at least in my experience).

The ultimate issues with KZ2 MP have more to do with interface and organization. Squad implementation, no party system, and the inability for players to view game settings before actually entering a game are the biggest stumbling blocks thrown around.

    • Reetesh says:

Like I said.. everything works nicely, once everyone is at the highest level, because thats when the choice to “be whatever you want” is fully realized. The implemented points system forces players to play in classes they have no interest in.

If you are trying to be a class based game, then why not allow players to chose what type of class they want to be first? Everyone at lowest level will have limited capabilites,i.e., one standard issue gun, ability,1 grenade and pistol. That standard issue gun and ability will differ among the classes, THEN when people keep playing as a single class, they progress deeeper into the class tree, gaining new abilities, and upgrading them with gained experience. (Hence the exclusion of second column in the linked chart would have done good)

That way.. everyone is playing the way they want to, everyone has progression. Thats why I felt that the classes could have had been implemented in a better fashion. No one is “discovering” their true class in this implementation(which is what I feel the intention was), majority will end up being the Assualt Rifle using offensive person, and the others who actually want to be assist/defence, will have to just wait till they’ve have played enough to unlock their class of choice.

  7. Emitsu says:

About the “Super Low ammo, No packs” section, there are means to increasing your ammo/grenade starting amounts, as well as ammo caches that can be repaired by Engineers to supply full ammo and grenades for teammates that interact with it.

  8. Andrew says:

All very valid and very true points, but i personally enjoyed unlocking classes as i ranked up. the no assists is annoying but the biggest annoyance for me is the lack of ranks !!!! But still by far the best game ever, im gona go play now…

  9. amattei2000 says:

this is a great game but you are right.

  10. Dylan says:

The only thing MP needs is a party system. If my friends are all playing Killzone 2 I want to be able to play with them on my team. As for starting with low ammo, you get more ammo when you the the medal for getting 10% of the kills for your team.

    • Reetesh says:

I’ve found the option to join a friend’s game quite useful.. but yeah, whenever everyone starts a game together rather than joining in later.. party support is required. I think, once some kind of Home support is released, they’ll have a nice party system up.. well, that was one of the original plans for HOME, right?

  11. FireWarrior-st says:

Ok now I see that you tried to be open minede but you missed something.
1st the class based side. If they had made it like BF and every other FPS games it wouldnt be anything new would it. Ok some like it like that ok play BF or something else.
2nd the assist points. If you play the game you notice you die easily. (dont remember was that on your list) So when you face an enemy it is very very veeeery likely that that encounter is a battle to the death. So there are usually no one to kill those guys so you really dont need assist points because one bullet takes a quarter of your health. So the sniper? It kills with one shot so no need to get assisst points.
3rd the cover. It is very sad not to have it on this one I agree.
4rd Super low ammo and no packs. Well sucks to be you if you dont realize how to use the Assault rifle and if you play 8 rounds without killing your self or your teammates you will get double starting ammo.
5th the ping. I think this is kinda stupid to whine about such an meaningless (Yes meaningless because the 80% of the servers have a very good ping) and whining things like that take away the real game.
6th the some confusion you do. I dont know wht the F are you doing but I havent done anything similar while playing.
And lastly if you get everything without chasing it first is it really fun? I enjoy the feeling when i accomplish something like that. Sorry if you dont. And I want to say that play until you get the assault class then the games changes a LOT.

    • Reetesh says:

Just being different and new doesnt mean its supposed to be good or useful. Trying to be different just for the sake of it, is plain useless.

I hope you read the whole thing I wrote about the ammo part :)

As for the ping thing..well, not everyone is on a 2Mbps broadband connection like you sir! There’s a lot of us still playing at 256k and its best if you get to see which pings the least and THEN join. The time it takes to join and load a game is just too long, so, if after the ~2m startup process you see that its pretty laggy (I’ve joined laggy matches), you’ve succesfully wasted time.

Lastly, I do love accomplishments.. but I want to run the path I choose and accomplish something. I dont want to run along an assigned path that everyone’s running THEN take a turn when I’ve reached the point where my chosen path opens. I will have very less motivation, or rather, a lot of demotivation the whole time I am running along the initial path to my turn. There are good chances that I will just stop running and go do something else.. like play some other game that allows me to be what I want to be, and have FUN.

YO MAN, KILLZONE 2 IS THE BEST GAME EVER MADE .. IT SOUND LIKE YOU DISSING THE GAME .. GET REAL .. COD IS PURE CRAP AND XBOX HAS NO BLU-RAY SO THE GAMES BLOW .. PS3 HARDWARE IS MORE THEN 10X 360 .. GET A LIFE !

  13. CRAZYSPYDER says:

is this some kind of new twitter blog for killzone 2?everytime some douche has a gripe with the game they write a blogarticle about it,while on the crapbox side they pretend nothings wrong.???can some one explain this to me?next time you wanna blog your gripes please remember that saying in class, read to yourself!

  14. naughtFamous says:

you are being a whiny cry-baby, through the ribbon system you will spawn with more ammo in time, on cod you have to use a precious perk slot for more ammo. Let me also add that “in the beginning” you are limited to general class, but you are what the army refers to as a grunt, you don’t know the maps, you don’t know the classes, hell you might not even know how to jump. So no, you don’t get to wield the rocket launcher or deploy a sentry gun! And if you can’t finish a kill as a sniper then maybe you shouldn’t BE a sniper?@?@

    • Reetesh says:

Maybe I’ve played other games before this.. maybe I know how to shoot headshots.. MAYBE, I can just play some other game and not waste time leveling up :)

  15. Craig says:

Oh aren’t you just asking for it :) Now you are on n4g so the SDF is gonna roast you but good! Why? Because you bad mouthed The Precious!

  16. bootleg says:

You’re an idiot! You’re crying over things not even a small girl would. Clearly you’re not a man up to a challenge! It doesn’t tale long to level up to General once u got the hang of it. If u can’t do it then don’t flame on it. Go back to playing COD or Halo! Man up ok!

    • Reetesh says:

This is an unnecessary, forced, challenge that no man should face. Its like telling someone that they can start learning how to drive a car, only after being able to drive a bike like an expert… I’d rather start learning how to drive a car, road rules, etc from the ground up than waste time riding a bike and learn traffic rules etc.

  17. Evan007 says:

    UNLOCKING CLASSES
is this really a problem? you rank up so fast it takes no time to unlock the other classes, I reached the highest rank in just over 10 hours. I like this feature because it forces new players to get used to gameplay and the layout of the maps before they just go setting spawn points or turrets when they dont know where they will be most effective.

    ASSIST POINTS
I agree assist points would be nice, and I would love to recieve some kind of award for wearing down some guy most of the way, just so my teammate can shoot him once in the ankle with a pistol and steal my kill. But it’s really not an issue to me. You get plenty of points to rank up fast without the minuscule addition of assist points.

    NO COVER
This was in the first phaze of the beta, but was removed because it proved to be almost useless in multiplayer. Since you cant see out of cover, you just get flanked when you’re not looking.

    LOW AMMO NO PACKS
Just wondering if you’ve played this game for more than a couple hours…
Once you earn 8 ribbons of a certain kind (cant remember which one) you get to start with twice as much ammo. Also There is TONS of ammo in the game. Not only do you automatically pick up ammo when you walk over a dead body who has the same weapon, but Engineers can repair AMMO BOXES where you can go for the sole purpose of picking up ammo, which includes loading you up with full grenades and more ammo clips than you will be able to use before you die. I just dont understand this complaint at all.

    NO PING
I agree 100% with this one, although I’ve had almost no problems with lag so it’s not a huge deal. Still would be nice to see.

    THE OTHER STUFF
I dont have a clue what you’re talking about with that X, O, spawn thing. I just press X, which takes you to the spawn selection screen, then i press X again so select my spawn point.

    MY ISSUES
I read all your issues with the game, and although I dont agree with some of them, I’d like to share mine….

No Real Party System—Sure you can join your friends and clan mates easily enough, unless the room is full. But it would be nice to meet up with a group before entering a game to ensure you are all on the same team.

Assault Class—This guy starts with a rocket launcher and twice the health as everyone else. I dont think I need to explain whats wrong with that. This class needs to be rebalanced somehow.

Room Names—There needs to be an option to view what is going on in certain rooms. Some people are smart enough to name their room “pistols only”, but several times I’ve unknowingly entered into a room in which it only allows certain classes. I would like to know before I take the time to enter the room.

I just wanted to give my perspective on things.

    Evan007

    • Reetesh says:

10hours, thats 25% more than the average SP completion time! I’ve suggested the thing about the class in the article and other comments too, need not explain again, I hope :)

Just the fact that “there is assist point” will cause a sense of teamplay to blossom in the players’ mind. Most people would just run along their own path, far from others and keep shooting, because they’ll think that shooting in a place where there are many people, is useless, as there’s no assurance of getting points. The magnitude of points might be feeble, but the existance is what matters.. it changes the way players think, which helps :)

Low ammo thing.. I hope you’ve read what I said! The first parah is what one immediately thinks, then its what I think that the devs thought and how its kinda good.

The other stuff is a “ntsc-j console and pal game” issue.. not for all.

The issues you’ve mentioned are quite noteworthy, hope they do something about it soon :)

  18. kpdc1 says:

the only thing i want added to the multiplayer is the cover system from the campagne everything else is fine, oh and HOME launching support!
the low ammo is gud because it makes u conserve ur ammo and pick ur shots carfully so eveyone isnt just running around shooting like on resistance2
u can get more ammo when the engineer fix’s the supply crates u can then keep topping up ur ammo when ur low

  19. oh yea says:

Dude, what’s with the nit picking. Granted the cover system should have made it to multiplayer but alas it didn’t. Leveling up is a bit long but u can’t compare it to other shooters I’ve spent 11 or so hrs online and I only have two levels to go. yea, the assistance points would have been nice but oh well. Suck it up.

  20. Shendow says:

The only class that sucks is Medic an why is that? because you have to take time to take out your 3 gun to heal (Two guns only) and I can threw bags of chips at people….come on that wasn’t a good idea for a medic no matter how you look at it and lets time I check buddy this game was called Killzone 2 not Halo 2.

  21. Matt says:

You missed all of the really crappy stuff about Killzone 2. Instant headshots suck. Underpowered shotgon, smg and grenade launcher while the M4 pistol is wayyyy overpowered. Impossible to aim sniper rifle. No auto-squad ups. Impossible to get the turret badge for the engineer. There’s a lot more stuff that makes K2’s multiplayer a pile of shit but I don’t want to write anymore.

    • Evan007 says:

The shotgun was just patched because it was over powered…It’s still a 1 hit kill from the intended range, while 2 or 3 shots can kill when it is way to far away to do damage. I agree that the M4 is overpowered. 1 shot to the ankle and I’m writhing on the floor. As far as the turret badge, it’s all about knowing where to place them and you’ll have no problem. The sniper rifle just takes practice, many of my friends will only play as a sniper because they love the sniper rifle. KZ2 has plenty of flaws, but what game doesn’t?
